Denatonium Benzoate (DB), described in the Merck Index as “the World’s most bitter compound”. It is added to consumer products containing toxic substances to deter or limit their ingestion, particularly where there is a risk to children.
Research shows that people can detect DB in water at 50 parts per billion. DB is bitter at 1 to 10 ppm and most products become undrinkable at 30 to 100 ppm. DB is also stable and inert. In addition so little is needed that properties of the product remain unchanged.
Addition levels for aversive applications in consumer products range usually between 40 to 500 ppm.
DB has proven an excellent solution to the requirement to denature industrial alcohol. It is used widely in this application, and is specified in the UK Ethanol B and the USA SDA-1 and SDA-40B standards.
